Our adventure through the green and blue island begins when we leave Skopelos town from the Dolphin of Skopelos office at 9am for a 15-minute minibus drive into the hills and the start of this easy hike from the area of Pirgos, which is Greek for tower or fortress. The route is a pleasant downhill track, walking through the breathtaking scenery filled with olive, cypress and Aleppo pine trees - estimates reckon that Skopelos has between five and eight million pines - and a variety of flowers and plantation. We make a short stop at the small remote church of the Panagitsa (Virgin Mary) for a ten-minute break, and then continue our stroll down towards the mesmerizing view of Skopelos’s famous blue sea. So, while hiking with the eyes on the destination, our walk will also include views of Pelion on the Greek mainland and Northern Greece with Halkidiki from the other side, and in the middle the islands of the Northern Sporades.
