Selous Game reserve is the largest national park in Tanzania and also one of the world’s largest wildlife sanctuaries and national parks.The Park with a staggering size of 40,893km2 hosts one of the world’s largest concentrations of wildlife, with approximately 145,000 buffalos, 4,000 Lions, 100,000 wildebeests, large hands of giraffes, 35000 zebras, 40000 hippos, 250,000 impalas, waterbucks, elands, bushbucks, leopards, crocodiles, and hyenasThe reserve is home to several unusual antelope species such as the majestic sable and puku, a localized wetland special. Wild dogs are present in the park and can be spotted when they are denning in the area accessible to tourists.With over 440 species recorded, Nyerere NP (Selous GR) is an excellent birding destination. Common birds include yellow-billed storks, kingfishers, lapwings, and colorful bee-eaters. Fish eagle and palm-nut vulture can be found perched high in the trees and skimmers can sometimes be seen flying across the water.
